Keto friendly wines are dry and typically include champagne, pinot noir, pinot grigio, cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. Wine that is not keto friendly are the sweet wines such as riesling, white zinfandel, moscato and dessert wines.
Keto wines cannot have added sugar and must be fully fermented, which means there is no residual sugar. Prior to grapes fermenting into wine, they are filled with sugar. Yeast is added to turn the sugar into alcohol. However, sometimes wineries will stop the yeast from eating all of the sugar. This left over sugar is called "residual sugar." Sugar in wine increases the carb count, both of which are to be avoided on the keto diet. The good news is that there are great tasting keto friendly wines with no sugar and very low carbs.
There are no nutritional labeling requirements for wine so many wineries will issue wine tech sheets. Look for the RS, which stands for residual sugar. This measures the sweetness in the wine. A wine is usually classified as dry if it contains less than 10g/L of residual sugar.
Typically, the cheaper the wine the more residual sugar. Spending more on a better wine will result in less residual sugar. Winemakers tend to keep less residual sugar when the grapes are of a higher quality. These wines do not need the added sweetness to improve the taste.
Understand the amounts of sugar calories in each glass of wine. Residual sugar is very difficult to taste in wine as it is distorted by the acidity and tannins. Similarly, if you put sugar on a lemon wedge, the acidity will cancel out most of the sweetness from the sugar. Below is a guide of residual sugar ranges:
